Amber extreme heat warning 18 & 19 July - Uniform and precautions

Sat 16 Jul 2022
As you will no doubt be aware, there is an Amber warning in place for Teesside on Monday and Tuesday next week, with regard to extreme heat.

Met Office information about the weather warning can be found here.

From Monday, we are suggesting that all students come to the academy in their school PE kits, namely black PE shorts, purple polo shirt and trainers. The usual PE black socks do not need to be worn, instead we suggest light-weight trainer socks or similar. Students should not wear alternative sports clothing to the above PE kit.

If students wish to wear their usual PE black joggers/tracksuit bottoms or black sports leggings (without logos) instead of PE shorts they can. If students do not wish to attend in PE kit, they should instead attend in the following reduced school uniform, namely school trousers or skirt (no tights are required), and white school shirt. Students should not bring blazers into school, nor ties. Shirts should have the top button undone.

Students should continue to bring a school bag for books, equipment and planners, and in particular for mobile phone storage, as phones should not be tucked into waistbands etc, particularly as this makes them prone to dropping. Phones should continue to be switched off, and out of sight in bags, particularly given the potential for overheating at this time. Of course, phones can be left at home if preferred!

Whilst the weather warning is only in place for Monday and Tuesday, these changes will remain in place for the rest of term, which ends at 2.30pm on Thursday 21 July.

We have end-of-term celebration events later in the week, including a Sports Day that includes giant inflatables (with a sporting theme!) and an ice-cream van to entertain the crowds. Attendance continues to be critical to all our students’ progress, particularly following Covid lockdowns, so we appreciate parental support as ever in securing excellent attendance at school each day.

We encourage students to wear sunscreen, for protection to/from school and when outside. We have enough seating for students to remain indoors at break/lunchtime if they wish. Students are welcome to wear a sunhat when outside (but not in the building!) Hydration is important, and we have water fountains to fill water bottles at break/lunchtimes.
