Y11 Transition to College & Training 2020

Introduction

Welcome to our Y11 Transition to Post-16 page. It has been a really difficult time in particular for Y11 during lockdown, particularly after working so hard preparing for their GCSEs, and wanting to prove how much they have achieved, particularly given the extra special efforts made in the last year. It was also really tough not being able to mark the end of their secondary education, through the Prom, Leavers’ Assembly and Leavers’ Breakfast. These events WILL take place in the autumn term, and we will be surveying Y11 very soon about how this might look, and what sort of time in the new term would suit most.

This page is designed to pull together all the various college events and ‘bridging’ materials that have been produced, especially for Y11 as they get ready for (hopefully) joining college, training and apprenticeship providers in September 2020.

We hope it is also useful for Y10 who are keen to plan ahead, decide on a course, apply and then be clear of exam grades needed during Y11.

We have included links to upcoming virtual college tours and open events, links to applications if you have changed your mind or STILL haven’t applied (very, very few of you) and finally a reminder about our CareersInc virtual careers advice that is available to you all.

Our Virtual College & Careers Advice

Whilst schools remain closed to the majority of students, a reminder that our independent CareersInc guidance is still available remotely, either with our CareersInc colleague Elaine Barker or others in her team. They can support students in ANY year group. Clearly those in Y11 who have yet to decide about college in September, and Y10 who are starting the process of (online) college visits and applications are really important to support!

Their qualified advisers can offer information and guidance on a number of topics including:

  • Explain all the different courses available such as BTECs, A-Levels, T-levels and NVQs
  • Information out universities and degree subjects, and applying for a place in Higher Education
  • Help you to identify a career which matches your skills, abilities and interests
  • Help you understand routes into all occupations

Y11 College Bridging Materials

Given the gap created by school closures, it is really important that Year 11 use the time to keep their studies going, particularly in the subjects they intend to take at college. We have tried to create a little motivation (and make it easier) by collating together all the work for various colleges and courses that has been set for Year 11. Use your free time wisely now, to prevent having to work longer hours under more pressure in September!

Prior Pursglove College

Prior have produced PDF documents of links to Bridging videos, resources, appropriate course materials and revisions guides, varied by subject. Their Bridging webpage is here and a list of all the examination awarding bodies, so you can make sure any books you buy match up, can be found here
